Teeth are meant to last a lifetime. The outer part of a tooth, the enamel, is a very hard substance that withstands tons of pressure on a regular basis. Tooth enamel is harder than bone. In fact it is the hardest substance in the human body. Still there are times when the enamel may crack, chip or break. Aging, clenching, grinding and chewing on hard objects all increase the likelihood of damage to the teeth. Sometimes a tooth gets cracked, chipped or broken through trauma such as a fall. Sometimes the damage is obvious and other times it may not be so apparent. Symptoms may include sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages, discomfort when biting down on the tooth or when chewing. The discomfort may be sporadic or only come when biting pressure is released. Then again, sometimes there are no symptoms at all until the pulp or heart of the tooth is irritated.

Early diagnosis and treatment of a damaged tooth is essential not just for aesthetic reasons, but also for the health of the tooth and surrounding tissues. Depending on the extent and type of damage, in many instances, the tooth can be saved with general dentistry. Superficial craze lines may occur in your teeth as an adult. Generally, this common phenomenon is not a cause for alarm. If you crack a cusp on a molar or bicuspid tooth, you have lost part of the chewing surface of that tooth. Usually this does not involve the pulp and seldom causes discomfort. The remedy is a new filling or a crown to protect the tooth depending on the severity of the damage.

When a tooth is cracked from the chewing surface vertically down toward the root, the extent of the crack determines whether or not the tooth can be saved. If the crack has not extended below the gum line, chances are it is salvageable. Cracks extending past the gum line or split teeth are usually extracted. Early detection of a cracked tooth is essential for saving it. At Timber Springs Dental, we will do our best to save your damaged tooth.
